SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Police were right around the corner when an Orleans Street resident called authorities and told them a man was trying to kick down his door in an attempt to break in.

Police responded to 72 Orleans St. about 12:30 a.m. Sunday and snuck up to the driveway. That's when they saw the suspect attempting to kick down the door, according to Springfield police Sgt. John Delaney.

The suspect saw police and fled on foot, but police caught him at the intersection of Lillian and Oak streets.

"The owner of the home was shook up but glad the police arrived in time to arrest this breaker," Delaney said.

Police charged Lawrence Gilliam, 21, of 95 Oswego St. in Springfield, with breaking and entering at night with intent to commit a felony, according to an arrest report.
