CHICOPEE, MA (WSHM) -

Three public safety officers from Chicopee were honored at a dinner Thursday evening.

The Polish Center of Discovery and Learning, along with Chicopee Mayor Richard Kos, presented awards for the first responders' character and judgement in the face of adversity.

The honorees were firefighter Steve Burkott, medical technician Peter Jerusik and retired police officer Bob Zygarowski.

"I'm very honored. My whole life I've been proud of my Polish heritage. I'm happy to be recognized by this organization this evening, they do a lot of great work. I'm happy to be here," Jerusik said.

Dozens of family, friends and other community members were on hand for the ceremony at the Collegian Court restaurant.
