SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

A recent traffic stop led to an illegal loaded gun being taken off Springfield streets.

The Springfield PD Street Crime Unit was patrolling the city's Old Hill neighborhood, where an 18-year-old girl was shot and killed Monday night, when police said officers spotted a car full of known gang members.

The vehicle, bearing South Carolina plates, made an illegal U-turn in front of two officers patrolling the Union Street neighborhood in an unmarked vehicle, according to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney.

Police initiated a traffic stop on Hancock Street and saw a rear passenger attempt to hide a gun. The officers then removed the suspect from the 2013 Toyota and confiscated a .25 caliber handgun that was fully loaded, Delaney said.

"The Street Crime Unit and sector cars will pay special attention to this high crime area making it very uncomfortable for known gang members to move," Delaney said. "This was a great arrest getting a gang member and handgun off the streets."

Police charged 23-year-old Malik Lowe, of 61 Tyler St., Springfield, with carrying a loaded firearm and possession of a firearm without a permit, according to an arrest report.
