LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Dozens of parents are angry after they were told they would not be allowed at their children's school during field day. But the principal of the school said it's some of the parents that are to blame for the ban.

Parents received a voicemail message in which Watson Lane Elementary School Principal, Joshua Williams said, "The decision not to allow parents to participate was made strictly because of student safety concerns."

"Field day is tons of fun, they get awards and ribbons," said Alisha McKinney, a mother whose child attends the school.

McKinney said she looks forward to field day every year and is upset she's being pushed away.

"I think it's important for parents to be at all our kids activities, field day, anything that we can be at," McKinney said.

In addition to the voicemail, parents received a letter citing security and safety reasons. But some parents, like Crystal Anderson, said the letter fell short of answering the questions they had.

"It perplexed me as to why something traditionally parent friendly was all of a sudden off limits to us," she said.

In a statement the school district said that some of the parents are to blame after acting "unruly," using "inappropriate language" and for "cutting kids in line."

"I've not seen anything like that. And if that is his reasoning behind it, then why weren't we told that?" Anderson asked.

Some parents are opting to not send their kids to school for field day. McKinney said she is taking her son to Kentucky Kingdom instead.

"He's not coming to school because I'm not allowed here. We're going to go have fun," she said.

Calls made to Williams were not returned Tuesday night, but JCPS stated the decision was not only left up to Williams. The JCPS security board recommend parents be banned from the event.
