State PD responding to deadly accident in Holyoke

HOLYOKE, MA (WSHM) -

Multiple state police cruisers responded to a car crash on Berkshire and Main streets in Holyoke Tuesday night that left one person dead.

State police said the two-car crash occurred shortly after 8 p.m. That area remained closed off as police investigated the accident.

The crash happened after state police attempted to stop a car on I-391 for motor vehicle violations.

That vehicle refused to stop, but state police did not chase the car because the driver immediately exited the highway into a densely populated Holyoke.

A few minutes later, state police discovered the scene of an accident between the fleeing vehicle and another car.

The 25-year-old Springfield man police attempted to stop died in the accident. The driver of the other vehicle was taken to Baystate Medical Center with serious injuries.

State police clarified Wednesday morning that there was never a formal pursuit because of the short interval of time between their attempt to stop the vehicle and the driver exiting the highway.

CBS 3 Springfield will have more details as they become available.
