KINGMAN, AZ (CBS5) -

A Chloride man was arrested after he allegedly choked his wife and one of their pet dogs because he was apparently upset by the way she was holding the animal, the Mohave County Sheriff's Office said.

William Eldred, 45, was arrested late Sunday.

According to a sheriff's report, the man's wife told deputies her husband frequently beats her and their dogs.

She said she was trimming her dog's nails when Eldred grabbed the pet and began choking the animal, sheriff's authorities said.

The victim said Eldred hit and pushed her and then grabbed her with both of his hands around he neck, sheriff's deputies said.

The man's wife refused medical treatment.

During a police interview, Eldred told deputies he was upset for the way his wife was holding the dog, sheriff's investigators said.

Deputies said they found Eldred possessed a plastic bag containing marijuana inside his pants pocket.
