(CNN) - A new study published in the journal Obesity found diet soda can help with weight lost.

Dr. Jim Hill at the University of Colorado designed the study - which was funded by the American Beverage Association, a trade group that includes Coke and Pepsi.

In the study, 300 diet soda drinkers were put on diets and split into two groups - one that could keep drinking diet soda and one that had to quit.

The group that kept drinking lost an average of four additional pounds over a 12-week period.

Critics say the diet soda drinkers were more successful because they had it easier.

Sticking to a new diet takes willpower, and it's easier to do if you're not giving up something else at the same time like soda.

Critics also say the short length of the study means it can't tell us very much about the possible long-term effects of drinking artificially-sweetened sodas.
