PORT EVERGLADES, FL (WCSC) - Coast Guard officials in Florida say they have recovered a body south of Port Everglades, Florida Sunday, in the vicinity crews have been searching for a missing kayaker from South Carolina.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Miami received a report at approximately 2:30 p.m. that witnesses had come upon a body in the water. Broward County Sheriff's office officials recovered the body from the water at approximately 2:45 p.m. and turned it over to the Broward County Medical Examiner's Office.

Coast Guard crews have searched more than 5,300 square nautical miles without finding any trace of David Lemonds, 47, of Aiken.  Authorities say local kayakers saw Lemonds leave John U. Lloyd Beach State Park on Thursday morning in a 12-foot yellow ocean kayak. Park rangers alerted the Coast Guard on Friday morning after seeing that Lemonds' truck had remained undisturbed overnight.

Coast Guard sea and air crews had searched the waters off the Dania Beach park. A search of the park by state wildlife officers failed to turn up any sign of Lemonds.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials are investigating the incident.
