Enfield police are investigating a daytime attempted armed robbery at the Enfield Square Mall.
According to police, Jeffrey Hluchnik, 42, of Enfield, was taken into custody after attempting to rob Furnari Jewelers on Sunday morning.
Hluchnik was armed with a realistic-looking air pistol, according to police.
"Something I've been working very hard for and in a moment he wanted to take it all away from me," said Joey Furnari, owner of Furnari Jewelers.
Hluchnik demanded thousands of dollars in gold chains but got the surprise of his life when the owner of the jewelry store threw a punch.
"He wanted to clean me out," said Furnari.
Furnari was with his co-worker when Hluchnik, who was wearing a mask, walked into his store at about 11 a.m.
"He just quietly snuck up and at first we see this and we're like is this a joke," said Furnari.
Furnari knew right away that this incident wasn't a joke.
"He lifted up his shirt and he had a pistol hanging out of it," Furnari said.
The owner actually gave Hluchnik a tray of gold chains, but he wanted more. Hluchnik became greedy and demanded diamonds. Furnari reacted when Hluchnik looked away.
"I punched him. I figured this was the only opportunity," Furnari said. "He threatened to kill myself and my co-worker Kathy and figured I had to fight for my life."
Furnari said he and the robber started fighting and he got Hluchnik on the floor. According to Furnari, Enfield police were at the jewelry store within minutes and arrested Hluchnik.
The Furnari Jewelry store is now closed and will reopen on Tuesday.
"Scary day. The guy wanted something for nothing, but I wasn't going to the victim," Furnari stated.
Furnari went to the hospital to get treated for some minor cuts. He told Eyewitness News that the same thing happened to his father about a year and a half ago. Two suspects went into his dad's store in Chicopee, MA, and demanded jewelry, but his father shot the suspects.
There is no word on if Hluchnik is being held on bond or a court date at this time.
