SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

A West Springfield man died early Sunday morning after the car he was riding in collided with a tractor-trailer on Interstate 291.

Massachusetts State Police told CBS 3 that the crash happened on the eastbound side of the highway, near exit 4, just after 1 a.m.

They said 25-year-old Moti Kuikel was a passenger in a Nissan Altima and died at the scene.

According to police, that car crashed into a tractor trailer that had stopped in the breakdown lane while the driver was investigating a mechanical issue.

Police said Rudra Kafley, 22, of West Springfield, was driving the Altima and suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Once he was released from Baystate Medical Center, police arrested Kafley and charged him with operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and a marked lanes violation.

The crash remains under investigation.
