Gas leak blocks streets in downtown Raleigh

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Several blocks in downtown Raleigh were evacuated Friday afternoon after a gas leak at Hargett and Haywood streets.

Both lanes of Wilmington Street were impacted.

Raleigh Police and other first responders were dispatched around 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon after  leak in the area of East Martin adn South Haywood streets.

Streets were blocked as of 6 p.m. inside an area bordered by New Bern Avenue, Tarboro Road, Davie Street and East Street.

At 5:37 p.m, crews from PSNC got the 2-inch gas line shut off and the gas is no longer leaking. Only a handful of customers are without service, PSNC said, and they should get service back later Friday night.

The Raleigh Police said the line was damaged while work was underway in a manhole.

A few homes in the area were evacuated but occupants were expected back in 30 minutes or so.
