A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on charges of suspected child abuse after he allegedly injured a 5-year-old boy he was babysitting Sunday, and placed the unconscious child in bed.
The 5-year-old died on Wednesday.
Phoenix police said they were called to Phoenix Children's Hospital just before 9 p.m. Sunday for a possible case of child abuse.
The victim's mother said she found her son unresponsive in the home after she got home from work and the child was airlifted to the hospital where he was in extremely critical condition.
Investigators said the 16-year-old was watching the 5-year-old as well as a 3-year-old and a 4-month-old.
Both the children's mother and the teen's father, who is the boyfriend of the children's mother, were at work and the teen got upset at the 5-year-old and pushed him to the ground, knocking the child unconscious, police said.
He then put the child in bed. When the teen's dad arrived home at 2:30 p.m. and the victim's mother arrived home at 5 p.m., they both believed the 5-year-old was asleep, and the teen said nothing to them about the incident.
At about 7 p.m. the mother went to get her son for supper and found the child had vomited and was unresponsive.
The 16-year-old was interviewed by detectives and detained Sunday at the Maricopa County Juvenile Detention Center on charges of suspected child abuse.
The 5-year-old boy died three days later.
Phoenix police say the investigation is ongoing.
The juvenile's name is not being released at this time.
