HOPKINSVILLE, KY (WFIE) -

A father and son were hurt when their single engine plane crashed on the right shoulder of the northbound lanes of Pennyrile Parkway in Christian County.

The Christian County Sheriff's Office says they were called to scene shortly before 2:00 p.m. on Thursday.

The 1943 Piper airplane had taken off from the Hopkinsville airport shortly before the crash.

Deputies say the plane began to lose altitude and the pilot decided to return to the airport, but wasn't able to make it.

The pilot, 58-year-old Mike Creed, was transported by helicopter to the hospital with unknown injuries.

His son, 20-year-old Benjamin Creed, was treated on the scene.

The FAA is en route to the scene to investigate.

As a result of the crash,  the northbound lanes of the Pennyrile had been closed but they reopened around 5:00 p.m.
