Suspect still at large after day-long manhunt

CHICOPEE, MA (WSHM) -

It was a busy day for law enforcement officers as they searched for a suspect accused of ramming into a police cruiser and taking off.

Police say the suspect has yet to be brought into custody.

It all began at about 12:15 Wednesday afternoon when a Massachusetts State Police officer pulled over a black Ford Taurus at the intersection of Springfield Street and Roosevelt Avenue in Chicopee for motor vehicle violations.

After both vehicles came to a stop, the Taurus suddenly accelerated, ramming the officer's cruiser.

Then driver then took off, but a pursuit was never initiated.

Chicopee police located the Taurus abandoned in a wooded area behind 219 Saratoga St., the home of Preston Delvale, who was not home at the time.

"We got calls from the numbers so I rushed over immediately to make sure everything was OK," Delvale said.

But everything was not OK.

"I talked to one of the officers who said they were in a high pursuit chase and that he just drove into my backyard and ended up into a swamp," Delvale said.

From there, the hunt was on.

State police along with Springfield and Chicopee police scoured an adjacent Springfield neighborhood both on the ground and in the air for their suspect.

The search temporarily prompted a soft lock down at Glenwood Elementary School.

"Anytime there's police activity in the vicinity of the school, we will always take that precaution. It doesn't mean the school has anything to do with what's going on. It's just a way to make sure students and staff stay protected," said Azell Cavaan with Springfield Public Schools.

Cavaan says the school day went on as normal but no one was allowed to enter or leave.

School was dismissed on time but with extra police presence.

The search was eventually called off around 4:30 p.m.

However, state police said they continue to move forward with their investigation into the incident.
