SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Glenwood Elementary School in Springfield is in lockdown while law enforcement agencies in the area search for a man on the run.

State police tell CBS 3 that a man rear-ended a state police cruiser after being pulled over for motor vehicle violations at the corner of Springfield and Roosevelt streets in Chicopee. The traffic stop occurred about 12:15 p.m.

The driver then accelerated away and crashed through a chain-link fence bordering a school ball field, but no pursuit was initiated. Chicopee police located the abandoned Ford Taurus in a wooded area behind 219 Saratoga St.

A state police helicopter from the department's Air Wing assisted in the search.

Springfield Public School officials say they have placed Glenwood Elementary in lockdown as a precaution. They say this is routine procedure and the school day is continuing as normal.

CBS 3 has crew at the scene and will have more details as they become available.
