Fees based on miles driven? It could be coming

LANSING, MI (WNEM) -

From toll roads to a higher gas taxes, the state of Michigan continues to look for ways to add money to the road budget.

But a first of its kind program could be coming to the state.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the University of Michigan is expected to release a report which would lay out a plan where motorists would pay a fee based on the number of miles they drive.

The report says with vehicles becoming more fuel efficient, the state's gas tax just isn't doing the job it was intended to do.

Under this option, the state would charge drivers by the number of miles driven. You could also be charged by the time of day you drive and the route you take.

The weight of your vehicle would also affect what you pay, with heavier vehicles paying more.

Officials say privacy would be the main hurdle to overcome if this were legislation were to be approved.
