SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) -
Officials with the Summerville Police Department say a 4-year-old boy has been transported to the hospital after accidentally shooting himself at a home in Summerville Monday afternoon.
According to Capt. Jon Rogers, at 4:30 p.m. officers responded to a home on West Richardson Avenue for a child with a gun shot wound.
The child's grandmother told police she was putting away groceries when she heard a "very loud bang." She then reportedly went outside to find her 4-year-old grandson laying on the ground in front of the house, bleeding from a gunshot wound to the head.
Police say the woman carried the victim inside in an attempt to provide aid. Officers arrived to find the injured child and a Taurus .25 handgun in the dining room.
According to a 911 call, the woman said she did not know where the 4-year-old got the gun from.
Dorchester County emergency officials say the child was flown to the Medical University of South Carolina.
Rogers said that the child lives in North Charleston and was visiting family members when the incident occurred.
