Wedding day for Sarah West and Ethan Schowalter-Hay
SALEM, OR (KPTV) -
A Salem nurse took on the additional role of wedding planner to put together a ceremony for the daughter of a terminal patient.
The wedding happened Feb. 1 at Salem Hospital. This week, a video of the ceremony was released in honor of Sherri West.
West was battling cancer and her daughter put wedding preparations on hold to help take care of her mother.
So, oncology nurse Laura Peterson stepped in.
"It's not just every girl's dream for her wedding day to be perfect, it's also the mother of the bride who wants to be there for her daughter and to see that day," Peterson said. "I wanted to make it happen for them."
In just three days, Peterson put together a wedding. Volunteers pitched in and local businesses made donations to bring it all together. That included flowers, a dress, hairstyling, makeup and a photographer.
A harpist even volunteered to provide the music.
Friends and family flew in from across the country to watch Sarah West and Ethan Schowalter-Hay say, "I do."
Sherri West died two weeks later.
"It was just beautiful. It was beautiful," Sherri West said on the day of the wedding. "I can die happy. I can die happy."
