SIMPSONVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A friendly deer found wandering through a Simpsonville neighborhood returned home Monday afternoon.

The deer's name is Comet, and it turns out he's a family pet on a farm just outside of Simpsonville.

On Sunday, Comet was spotted wandering through the Bridgewater subdivision, just one-eighth of a mile from the pasture where he lives with other animals, including bulls and horses.

People gathered around to see Comet, but much to residents' surprise, the deer wasn't scared. They said he appeared quite calm around people. Some thought he may have been domesticated.

The mystery of where this tame deer came from was cracked Monday, when Comet returned home - all on his own.  Comet's owner said she came outside, and found him standing in the yard, waiting to be let back in the barn.

His owner, Aretta Murphy, said he's lived on her farm the past five years.  Comet got out after a tree fell on the fence, and she found out after seeing Comet's picture on Facebook.

Murphy said Comet is indeed quite friendly. Several times a year, she hosts a Farm Day and let special-needs children come out and pet the animals, including Comet, and play on the farm.

Comet is a Fallow deer, which is not native to South Carolina. According to Fallow Deer Reserve, Fallow deer originated from the Mediterranean region of Europe and Asia Minor and were later brought over to parts of North America.
