Local woman and twin sister meet after 78 years apart

ALBANY, OR (KPTV) -

After 78 years apart, twins meet for the first time since they were separated as babies.

"It was shock, really," twin Ann Hunt said.

"I was certainly in a daze," twin Elizabeth Hamel said.

Both were born in England in 1936. When their father left, their unmarried mother made a difficult decision. She raised Hamel but put Hunt up for adoption.

"My mum, she doted on me, so I was a lucky child really," Hunt said.

It wasn't until about a year ago, with a push from her own daughter, that Hunt did a little digging. Together, they found she had a twin sister now living in Oregon. Hunt wrote a letter and sent it off to Hamel in Albany.

"I received this letter. I opened it right away," Hamel said. "Dear Mrs. Elizabeth Hamel, I'm writing to you as I'm searching for a family connection."

After that, a little talking and a lot of traveling brought them face to face just a few days ago.

Now, they say they won't let distance or time separate them again.

"We don't watch the future, do we sister?" They said. "You can't tell what's going to happen in the future, but I'm sure we'll keep in touch for the rest of our lives."
