Firefighters successfully rescued a 15-year-old mini horse from a 4-foot sinkhole that was the cesspool of an old septic system.
Authorities responded to a home in South Chatham after a caller reported the animal had fallen into the hole around 6 a.m. Friday, according to Chatham Fire Department Captain Nelson Wirtz.
Firefighters dug a ramp for the horse to safely walk out of the hole. The horse was uninjured, but agitated by the incident, Wirtz said.
