Amherst police sergeant retires after 27 years

AMHERST, MA (WSHM) -

Amherst Police Sergeant Charles H. Nelson III retired Thursday after almost 27 years of service with the department.

Nelson was appointed as a patrol officer in 1987 after serving as an officer with a sheriff's department in North Dakota. Prior to that Nelson served in the United States Air Force.

Nelson, who was promoted to sergeant in 2000, has also served on the Amherst Police Department Detective Bureau and the search and rescue team.

Nelson plans to move to South Carolina with his wife, Gail, following his retirement.
