SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Gov. Deval Patrick announced a $5.2 million grant to complete the construction and furnishings for a new UMass Center at Tower Square in Springfield.

The grant, which is funded through the FY2014 capital plan, will help UMass guarantee completion of construction in time for the upcoming fall semester. There will be 40 course offerings across 10 academic programs, including nursing, education, liberal arts and masters of business administration.

Patrick called the announcement great news for Springfield and the entire UMass system.

"This new center will provide vital education and skills training resources in downtown Springfield, and open up new educational and job opportunities for the residents of Springfield and beyond," Patrick said.

UMass President Robert L. Caret elaborated on how the grant will dramatically strengthen the new UMass Center in Springfield.

"(It) is not only an educational collaboration, but also an economic initiative, and a downtown revitalization initiative, while at its core an investment in peoples' lives and their futures," Caret said.

In November 2013, Patrick announced that UMass selected Tower Square to house the new satellite center. The 26,000-square-foot facility is located in downtown Springfield and is two blocks from City Hall and the MassMutual Center.

The Springfield UMass Center is scheduled to fully open at the end of August, in time for the fall 2014 semester.

CBS 3 Springfield's Julie Leonardi will have a full report with more details at 4 p.m.
