MILFORD, CT (WFSB) -

A 16-year-old student undergoing a psychiatric evaluation for a deadly stabbing will automatically be transferred from juvenile court to adult court, according to state officials.

Christopher Plaskon was charged with murdering 16-year-old Maren Sanchez on Friday.

Police were looking into whether the incident stemmed from Plaskon's frustration that Sanchez would not go to the junior prom with him. They made it clear that they were looking into all possible motives.

Officers said a teacher walked up on the attack while it happened in a hallway of Jonathan Law High School in Milford on Friday morning.

Both were juniors at the school.

Several people told Eyewitness News that Plaskon was a typical teenager. Plaskon, who is one of five boys, played on the football and baseball team and ran track. His family was known in the Milford shoreline neighborhood for being very involved.

"The kids said he was a very quiet guy. I don't know what made him to do it," said Sami Bojka, who lives in Plaskon's neighborhood.

Plaskon would first be presented in juvenile court because of his age and the process in Connecticut. However, because he was charged with murder, the state's attorney said the case will automatically be transferred to adult court.

Prosecutors said it would be up to them if the case was transferred back. However, it appeared Monday that it was unlikely to return to juvenile court.

Plaskon is currently in the hospital on suicide watch.

The suspect's attorney said Plaskon's family was devastated. He released a statement to Sanchez's family this weekend.

"We know they've suffered a tremendous loss and thoughts and prayers are with the Sanchez family," the statement said.

Attorneys for the suspect told Eyewitness News on Monday they plan to make some sort of statement by mid-week.

The states attorney indicated the arraignment of Plaskon in adult court will likely happen early this week.
