The American Heart Association held its 2014 Pioneer Valley Heart Walk on Sunday at Forest Park.
The association is the largest voluntary health organization fighting heart disease, which they said is the Pioneer Valley's No. 1 cause of death.
Hundreds came out to walk on Sunday and raise awareness about heart disease and how exercise can prevent it.
Most of those walking Sunday have been personally affected by the disease.
One walker told CBS 3 that awareness events like the walk are key to prevention.
"I think it's great that they put on an event like this every year to raise awareness," said Lisa Carroll, walking for a team from Northampton Cardiology. "Heart disease is a major cause of illness in this country. We work hard at it every day, so it's something we're all very proud of."
Along with the walk, Sunday's event featured health screenings, music, entertainment for children and refreshments.
