Raleigh honors fallen police with memorial

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

A memorial was unveiled Friday that honors eight Raleigh police officers killed in the line of duty between 1922 and 2002.

Raleigh’s Clearscapes created the memorial which has eight holes that represent the fallen officers. The $500,000 memorial features a 60-foot water table reflecting the sky with 21 stone structures of granite.

Thomas Sayre of Clearscapes said the reflecting pool is representative of the ideal that Raleigh’s officers serve.

“These eight officers gave their lives to protect our city and its citizens. This dedication service and police memorial are important not only to remember our fallen officers, but they are important to these officers’ families, current police officers and the community as a whole,” said Capt. Kimberly Swinson, an organizer of the Raleigh Police Memorial dedication ceremony.

The Raleigh Police Memorial Foundation has worked since 2009 to make the memorial a reality.

The memorial sits on W. Hargett Street outside the Avery C. Upchurch Government Complex.
