MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The Pelicans Baseball Team is a major attraction in Myrtle Beach. The season is just getting started, but the team is already flying into problems. Their new marketing campaign is not getting the feedback they were expecting.
The slogan is "Pelicans Baseball: Un-flocking-believable!" Some feel that it is too close to the swear word for children to see.
The General Manager, Andy Milovich explains: "We were aware there was some potential people may interpret it negatively, but we didn't anticipate anything overly negative. Our intentions were to really represent the pelicans and this unbelievable stadium experience."
Others were not offended by the slogan and appreciated the pun.
"I think it's pretty cool, it's pretty catchy," says Steven Chase Phillips. "I mean you're not saying nothing bad."
Some say children are smarter than most people think though, and they can pick up on the wording.
"When in doubt don't - so if it is proven to be offensive, I would just let it go rather than offending the community," says Joy Brown.
Milovich could not agree more, which is why he says it was an easy decision to change the slogan, despite the cost.
"We're the Grand Strand's team, and if it makes sense to change it, lets change it and invest the money," Milovich says.
Brown was pleasantly surprised to find out the Pelicans were changing it so soon.
"I have to commend them to care about the community that much and to go through the trouble to undo something," Brown adds.
Milovich says they have already abandoned the slogan and ordered new merchandise. He also wants to move forward with other catchy slogans.
He says they are trying "things like 'Amaze-wings,' 'Bird-tastic' - different things that tie into the Pelicans and what the Pelicans experience is known for."
Milovich says the digital billboards have already been changed, and the printed billboard will be gone by next week, adding that everything should be flushed out within the next couple of weeks.
