Suspects charged for putting rabbit heads in Westfield mailboxes

WESTFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

There was a disturbing discovery in Westfield as residents found severed rabbit heads in their mailboxes.

Adrianne Williamson lives in the neighborhood where the heads were found. She said she was shocked when she heard about it.

"I just find it disgusting," said Williamson.

"I felt bad because a lot of people on this street have kids. Unfortunately, somebody doesn't care about that," she continued.

Two rabbit heads were found in two separate mailboxes, with the first being discovered on Pinehurst Street and the second found on adjacent Willis Street.

Westfield police Sgt. Steve Dickinson told CBS 3 a 26-year-old Chicopee resident and a 24-year-old Springfield resident placed the rabbit heads inside those mailboxes.

Dickinson said the two men deliver newspapers and placed the heads in the mailboxes while working their route.

Police said sometime between April 14 and April 16 the two found five dead rabbits on the side of the road. The suspects told police they then cut the heads off and placed them in the mailboxes because they thought it would be a funny prank for Easter.

Police said the suspects placed five heads into five random mailboxes, but so far only two have been reported.

Williamson said she's not too concerned over the incident, but with young children at home, she said she will remain cautious.

"I would've been upset if I went to open the mailbox and my son found it," said Williamson.

But luckily her mailbox was spared.

"I just checked the mail and I didn't get anything, so I'm happy about that," said Williamson.

Police said the two will be charged accordingly.
