Three 12-year-olds catch a 692-pound shark in Sarasota

SARASOTA, FL (WFLA) -

Three 12-year-old boys caught a fish in Sarasota that would make a grown man jealous.

The kids reeled in a Mako shark weighing in at 692 pounds.

First thing Wednesday morning, Sam Von Duhn joined his dad and some friends on a deep sea fishing trip, and Sam was determined to get his big catch.

"Grouper,” he said. “I just think they're fun to catch, I like to eat them."

Sam and his family are from Ohio. They’re vacationing in Sarasota with some of Sam’s buddies - Tony Musca and Ryan Roberts. The group took a boat from Double Nickel Charters out to the gulf. They caught some fish here and there but then, about 26 miles out to sea, they got something else.

"My rod started bending like crazy!”

Sam’s dad, Mark Von Duhn said, "The captain saw a flash of blue and white behind him and he said, 'I think that's a Mako!' And then the excitement started."

The boys rotated every few minutes, wrestling the rod and fighting to reel the shark in.

"Basically everyone was holding onto it. And one guy had to use both hands just to crank the wheel,” said Sam.

They battled the shark for long, tiring 20 minutes.

And finally, Sam reeled it to the surface - a 692 pound mako shark!

"I was surprised that it was that huge,” said Sam.

"They don't realize that this is a fish of a lifetime,” said Mark.

It was the talk at the docks later that day. And these boys have a fish tale that will last the rest of their lives.

“[Lots of fishermen are] probably jealous of me right now,” he joked.

But despite the big prize, Sam still fell short of his goal.

“For us, having done this for a long time, we recognize how special it was. But for them, they were ready to go back out and catch grouper!” said Mark.

There's a lot of meat on that shark so the family will soon hold a fish fry over at dock.

And they're going to take the shark's jaw and turn it into a trophy for the three boys to share.
