RALEIGH, N.C. -

A former Ku Klux Klan leader accused of killing three people in attacks at a Jewish community center in Kansas last week was once arrested when he was caught with a black male prostitute in Raleigh, according to a former federal prosecutor.

Avowed white supremacist Frazier Glenn Cross, 73, is charged with the April 13 killings of Dr. William Lewis Corporon and his 14-year-old grandson, Reat Griffin Underwood, outside the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City.

He is also accused of killing Terri LaManno at a nearby Jewish retirement complex shortly after the shootings at the Jewish Community Center.

Cross, a one-time government informer, shouted "Heil Hitler" at television cameras as he was arrested after the shootings.

Cross, who is also known as Frazier Glenn Miller, served three years in federal prison in the late 1980s, convicted on weapons charges and for threatening a race war. He avoided a longer sentence in exchange for testifying against members of the White Patriot Party, a group former North Carolina radio reporter Cash Michaels said elicited fear in Raleigh's minorities.

Michaels said the group would walk the streets of downtown Raleigh carrying Confederate flags and wearing white robes. And Miller was always in the media threatening a race war.

"In 1987, he was someone that folks really paid attention to," Michaels recalled. "They were really concerned about what could happen."

Judge Doug McCullough, who was a prosecutor on Miller's case in federal court, described him as a "bombastic character," explaining that Miller would try to get people angry to feel important.

In contrast to public perception, McCullough said he recalled an incident when Miller was caught with a black prostitute that turned out to be a man.

Cross now faces a state charge of capital murder for the deaths of Corporon and Underwood and a count of first-degree premeditated murder for LaManno's death.
