The Wake County school board unanimously approved the district's proposed $1.37 billion budget Tuesday for the 2014-15 school year.

The budget includes a a 3.5-percent salary increase for all employees in the Wake County Public School System, increasing teacher pay to reach national averages for teacher salaries by 2020. Superintendent Jim Merrill said the raises would require about $130 million.

"While we are encouraged by recent comments by the governor concerning state salary increases for early career teachers, we need to send a strong local message to our employees of their worth and importance," Merrill said in a release.

The budget must now be approved by county commissioners.

No changes were made to the operating budget Merrill presented March 18.
