RALEIGH, N.C. -

A new music venue will open in Raleigh this weekend, and its developer hopes the $10 million space will be a welcome addition for North Hills' visitors.

The idea for the 1-acre Midtown Park has been in the back of developer John Kane’s mind for more than a decade; and this weekend, the park will open with a celebration Saturday that includes performances from Spare Change, Old Man Whickutt and The Legacy Motown Revue.

Kane said the time had to be right before the park could come to fruition. His vision has helped turn North Hills into the urban oasis it is today.

"For those for us who grew up in Raleigh and know what this area used to look like, this is a great turnaround," said Jay Jafari, the manager of Zoe's Kitchen in North Hills.

Besides the development of apartments and retail outlets, Midtown Park will offer an acre of green space where Kane hopes kids can play during the week and adults can relax to music on the weekends.

"It's really a place where people can gather, enjoy, run with their dogs, throw a Frisbee with their grandchild -- whatever it is they want to do," Kane said.

While the green space will offer a place for people to kick back, Jafari said the concerts at 10,000-person amphitheater will also be good for area businesses.

"It'll definitely bring in some foot traffic," he said.

In addition to Saturday's concert, there will be a Spring fashion show on Sunday. North Tower, Four Founders and The Embers will also perform on Sunday.

Kane said there are no plans to charge for any concerts at the park in the months and years ahead.
