MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) - A 10-year-old girl remains hospitalized Monday night after getting shot in the head. Memphis police say her 13-year-old brother pulled the trigger.

Monday's shooting happened in the 4000 block of Orleans Road in Whitehaven. Family members tell WMC Action News 5 that the girl was shot in the temple. Her 13-year-old brother is in custody.

Neighbors say they were afraid something like this might happen. They also say that the boy, known as "Drama," might be trouble one day.

Dennis Wooders claims the kid recently shot out his truck's rear window with a BB gun.

"I didn't see him do it, but when I went over there he kind of spilled the beans a little bit," said Wooders.

The 13-year-old is now accused of shooting his 10-year-old sister.

"I'm sorry to hear about his sister, but, it's just terrible man," added Wooders.

Memphis police say the shooting happened around 1 p.m. Monday while the two children were home alone. WMC Action News 5 has also learned the boy may have initially claimed his sister was injured by a screwdriver, until a gun was found in the back yard.

"It shouldn't even be possible. Why would you have a gun in the home when you know you have minors that ramble through the home when you're not there? At least lock it up, right? It shouldn't even be there anyway," said Verlynda Wooders.

Police have released little information regarding the shooting, including what caliber of weapon was used.

Family members at the hospital where the 10-year-old was taken in extremely critical condition did not want to talk on camera, but they say she was shot in the temple.

Neighbors also say the 13-year-old brother may need help, too.

"He was headed up the wrong road, you know? He was headed in the wrong direction," said Dennis Wooders.

According to an update from MPD on Tuesday morning, the 10-year-old girl is still extremely critical at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital.

The victim's brother is charged with felony reckless endangerment and unlawful possession of weapon.

There is no information about where the gun came from or if anyone else might be charged.
