TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A University of Arizona graduate who lost her leg in last year's Boston Marathon bombing completed a remarkable comeback by winning her division in this year's race.

Jessica Kensky won the women's handcycle race with a time of 2 hours, 14 minutes, 13 seconds. She crossed the finish hand-in-hand with her husband, Patrick Downes, who also lost a leg in the bombing. Downes finished 17th in the men's handcycle race (2:14:13).

Kensky lost her left leg and almost lost her right foot to amputation after last year's bombing.

Two other Arizona graduates, Shirley Reilly and Abdi Abdirahman each finished in the top 20 of their divisions in the Boston Marathon on Monday.

Abdirahman finished his first Boston Marathon in 16th place with a time of 2:16:06.

Reilly finished seventh (1:44:34) in the women's pushrim wheelchair division. Reilly was racing as a defending champion, having won last year's race with a time of 1:37:36.

Abdirahman, a four-time Olympian who finished second at the New York Marathon in 2008, is a graduate of Tucson High Magnet School and attended Pima Community College.

The Somali-born Abdirahman, who became a U.S. citizen in 2000, was trying to become the first American male to win the event since 1983 (Greg Meyer).

That honor went instead to Meb Keflezighi, who won the 26.2-mile race in 2:08:37.

Rita Jeptoo, from Kenya, was declared the winner of the women's division in 2:18:57. It was her second straight victory.
