RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Bus service in downtown Richmond is set to expand, with GRTC Transit System set to open a new transfer plaza this Sunday.

GRTC officials said the new transfer plaza, along 9th and Leigh Streets downtown, will accommodate as many as 90 buses per hour at peak times, and will serve between 5,000 and 8,000 riders every day. The transfer plaza will include 13 curbside bus bays along 9th and Leigh Streets.

The first buses are scheduled to arrive at the plaza shortly before 5 a.m. Sunday.

GRTC spokeswoman Joan Straszewski said GRTC Plaza Ambassadors will be on hand during the first week at peak morning and afternoon hours to answer questions and help familiarize riders with the plaza's features and conveniences. Riders will be able to pick up new schedules and information for the routes serviced by the plaza.

With Richmond about to host two major bicycle racing events (the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships coming up in May, and next year's UCI Road World Championship) Straszewski said GRTC has the challenge of maintaining transit operations while continuing to develop a permanent location for a transfer center.
