SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

After being spotted by police, a fugitive fled on foot and broke into a Springfield home in order to make an outfit change early Tuesday morning.

Springfield police pulled over a white Chevy Impala about 1 a.m. for having no front license plate on Eastern Avenue, but when they approached the car the fugitive fled on foot, according to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney.

As the wanted man ran from police he held his pants as if he was carrying a gun, Delaney said.

The foot chase went through backyards on Quincy Street, Pendleton Avenue and Eastern Avenue and the suspect ran to the back of a house on Tyler Street where he kicked the door in, Delaney said.

"Once inside he screamed at the occupant of the home for a shirt," Delaney said, adding that the man was wearing a white hooded sweatshirt that stood out at night when the foot pursuit initiated.

The victim yelled at the man to leave his home and he fled out the front door to be eventually caught in front of 166 Quincy St.

"It turns out that the suspect fled because he was a ‘most wanted fugitive' from Springfield," Delaney said.

Police arrested 19-year-old Shamaad Jones, of 164 Belmont Ave. He was charged with breaking and entering, and resisting arrest. He also had warrants from Springfield for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, distribution of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to sell, carrying a dangerous weapon and resisting arrest, Delaney said.

In addition, Jones had a warrant for his arrest out of Northampton for armed robbery while masked.
