AMHERST, MA (WSHM) -

This past week, UMass basketball player Derrick Gordon came out as gay, making him the first openly gay player in Division One Men's College Basketball.

The Westboro Baptist Church, headquartered in Topeka, KS, subsequently announced their plans to protest on the UMass campus.

According to its website, the church planned to hold its protest Wednesday from 12:15 p.m. until 1 p.m. No exact location on campus was given.

UMass students gathered for a 'Unity Rally' on campus in support of Derrick Gordon during the time Westboro Baptist members had planned to protest.

The Westboro Baptist Church is known for their anti-gay views and picketing of military funerals. They had planned to travel to UMass.

Last week, UMass penned a letter on the campus website essentially saying the church will not be welcomed on campus.

CBS 3 Springfield will bring you more updates as they are made available.
