WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Baseball teams from all over New Hanover County gathered Sunday morning for a service at Impact Church honoring the life of Alex Newsome. Newsome died after being struck by a line drive at Roland Grise Middle School.
The Roland Grise baseball team is grieving the loss of their friend and team manager. They said they are still trying to make sense of the tragedy that occurred Friday night at practice.
"He got hit and went down and we rushed over to him and asked if he was ok. He stood up and said ‘yeah, yeah I'm good' and then he dropped again. And he never woke up," said baseball team member Tyler Croom. "You could just see there was no life in him. It was terrible."
Hundreds poured into Impact Church where Pastor Donnie King prepared a sermon to help the teams grieve and make peace with the tragedy.
"We just wanted to love on the community," said King. "We wanted to be able to speak hope. There's a lot of healing to be done right now. But with God's help we'll get there."
The pastor invited each member of the baseball community to write a prayer for Alex. They dropped their prayer card inside a ball bag, and then picked up a baseball in remembrance of Alex. The baseball is intended to be a small reminder of the tremendous impact Alex had in the baseball community.
"He did a lot of stuff for the team. He cared about the team," said Crooms. "We will always remember him. He was just an awesome kid."
