SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Police responded to 131 Verge St. just after 5 a.m. Friday to be greeted at the door by a female who had blood on her face and neck.

At first, the woman slammed the door in the officer's face, but eventually she allowed police inside the home.

Police found a home that was in total disarray with glass shattered and broken furniture scattered about, Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney said.

Upon speaking with minor children and a teenage witness in the home, police learned that the family stepfather woke up the teen by hitting him with a broom and yelling at him to clean his room, Delaney said.

"The stepfather also threw 'Kool Aid' at the boy and told him to clean it up," Delaney said, adding that the children indicated the man was drunk.

The mother intervened in order to defend her son, but the fight continued in another room of the house, Delaney said.

Police searched the home and found a 26-year-old victim that had suffered a stab wound to the chest. Police performed first aid on the victim and he was rushed to Baystate Medical Center where he has stabilized, but is in serious condition, Delaney said.

Springfield police charged the mother, 33-year-old Serina Wainscott, of 131 Verge St., with attempted murder and assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon. She was arraigned Friday in Springfield District Court.
