Truck crashes into Toledo business after driver has diabetic shock

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Emergency crews were called to central Toledo after a chain-reaction crash sent a pickup truck through a building Friday morning.

Shortly after 7 a.m., police say Herman Scott, who was driving a black Ford 150, went into a diabetic shock. He drove through a red light at Monroe and 17th streets, which caused him to hit a red Ford 150, driven by Jonathan Martell. However, police say Scott fled the scene and continued westbound down Monroe Street, swerving into oncoming traffic and crashing into the Car Quest Auto Parts store.

According to police, Scott burned the rear tires off the truck in his effort to free himself from the building. He then fled eastbound on Monroe, driving on the rims of the rear wheels until he was apprehended by police at Monroe and 12th streets.

"He was stuck over there for a little bit, burning up the tires. Just blew the tires completely off the rim. He finally got out. That's when he came through here, dump all of the brick and the block," said Jim Skelly who witnessed the incident.

Scott went to the hospital to be checked out. The extent of his injuries are unknown at this time.

Martell was treated for a minor injury at the scene.

Police examined traffic cameras and questioned witnesses to determine exactly what happened. Many are glad the situation did not end worse.
