Australia hit by powerful tropical cyclone Friday

Posted: Updated:

A powerful tropical cyclone (in the U.S. these are called hurricanes) hit the northeast coast of Australia Friday night.

Tropical Cyclone Ita was a Category 5 storm out to sea, but at landfall had weakened to a Category 3 storm with 105 MPH winds.

Queensland, Australia is 17 hours ahead of Tucson, which means Friday night in Australia was early Friday morning in Tucson.

Damaging winds, powerful waves, heavy rain and flash flooding are expected. The greatest potential hazard for the people on the coast is storm surge.  It could prove to be one of the worst in Australia's history.  However, flooding from the storm's downpours is generally the biggest killer associated with tropical systems.

Below is the latest forecast track issued by the Australian Government's Bureau of Meteorology.
