RALEIGH, N.C. -

Colorado State University released its forecast for the 2014 Atlantic Hurricane Season Thursday.

The forecast says the season to be less active than normal as at least a moderate El Nino could develop through the summer and fall.

As a matter of fact, the Tropical Atlantic is already cooler than average.

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. CSU scientists forecast nine named storms with three becoming hurricanes during that time frame.

Scientists at CSU also predict one major hurricane this season, which would be a category 3, 4 or 5 storm. The probability of one of these major hurricanes hitting the East Coast ,including the Florida Peninsula, would be around 20 percent. The probability over the past century of this event was around 31 percent.

The first names of the 2014 hurricane season are Arthur, Bertha, Cristobal and Dolly.

These names could be almost half of this season’s storms if the forecast is accurate.

It’s still important to have a plan in place for hurricane season as it only takes one land-falling storm to make a big impact.
