SCOTTSDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

A 27-year-old man was arrested by Scottsdale police after he broke into his ex-girlfriend's apartment, assaulted her and threw her small dog into a breakfast bar Tuesday.

Police said Carlos Martinez ran from the apartment before officers arrived, but was caught after a brief foot chase a few blocks away.

The 34-year-old woman said she had broken up with Martinez about three months ago and that he unexpectedly showed up at her apartment near 70th Street and Thomas Road on Tuesday.

She told police she refused to let him in, but he broke down a patio door and forced his way into the apartment and grabbed her.

Police also found a Yorkshire terrier with blood around its mouth and limping. She told police Martinez threw the dog into the breakfast bar during the tirade.

Police said the woman was not seriously injured.

Martinez was arrested and taken to the Maricopa County Jail on charges of criminal damage, felony trespass, assault, disorderly conduct, animal cruelty and failure to obey police.
