Dozens of local firefighters gathered in a Sixteen Acres parking lot wearing their class A dress uniforms with black tape wrapped around their badges, awaiting coach buses to take them to Boston to honor two fallen firefighters killed in the line of duty on Boylston Street last week.
Thousands of firefighters from across the country gathered with family, friends and mourners at a wake Wednesday for 43-year-old Lt. Edward Walsh at St. Patrick's Church in Watertown.
Walsh grew up in the Boston suburb where his father and several family members served as firefighters. Walsh will be buried next to his father, a Watertown firefighter.
Firefighter Michael Kennedy's wake is also scheduled for Wednesday with a funeral set for Thursday in Boston's West Roxbury neighborhood.
Walsh died alongside 33-year-old firefighter Michael Kennedy when they became trapped in the March 26 blaze at a Back Bay-area brownstone building. Walsh was married with three children all under the age of 10.
