Warm weather scams set to return

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -
There's always someone out there trying to make a buck at your expense, but can you afford to be scammed?

The answer is probably no, and now there's one more reason to be on the lookout after several police departments issued a warning.

It's one of the oldest and common scams out there; People posing as contractors going door to door looking to make home improvements, when all they really want is to take your money.

"This time of year, homeowners need to be watchful for those vehicles claiming to have great deals on quick repairs," said Sue McConnell with the Better Business Bureau of Cleveland.

McConnell has seen it all. As the warmer weather approaches, consider this a warning.

Police departments are reaching out to residents before it's too late.

"If someone comes knocking on your door offering to seal your driveway do some quick painting, they claim to have supplies left over, they do work down the street. Don't make any snap decisions," McConnell said.

She also suggested getting the name and address of the company, g
etting a good description of the people in the car as well as the vehicle, taking down the license plate and asking police to check it out.

"Check with the BBB," McConnell said. "Check with the building department to make sure they're properly registered. Whatever you do, don't hand over money before you've gone through the checklist, because the potential scammer will walk away with your cash.

"You could lose tens of thousands of dollars," McConnell said. "They could do more damage to your home and they could be gone."

Also, if you plan on being away from your home for an extended length of time you can always call police and request an officer to drive by your house.
