Democrat John Velis has been voted the new representative for the 4th Hampden District, defeating Republican Dan Allie.
Velis took 53 percent of the vote and will work as a state representative for the remaining seven months of the term that now state Sen. Don Humason left.
Velis is a lawyer and a captain in the Army Reserves.
There was a 21 percent voter turnout with just more than 5,000 ballots cast.
