Local group gets early start on Autism Awareness Month

HOLYOKE, MA (WSHM) -

April is Autism Awareness Month, and one group got an early start on getting the word out.

The committee for the Western New England Walk for Autism Speaks set up an information table at the Holyoke Mall on Saturday.

The group offered information, as well as ways for the public to show their support for families living with autism.

That included the sale of blue light bulbs, as they ask the community to go blue for autism in April.

Organizers said this is the time for them to get active.

"We need more awareness so we can make some more national changes to laws with insurance regulations, getting the kids help and having more services covered by insurance companies," said Monica Donnelly, a co-chair of the committee.

On April 6, the University of Massachusetts chapter of Alpha Epsilon Pi will hold a 5K in Amherst Center to benefit Autism Speaks.

They said they have 800 runners and walkers signed up and have already raised $40,000.
