Campus police identify suspect after UNC Alert

Posted: Updated:

University of North Carolina Campus Police has identified the armed suspect who prompted an alert on UNC’s campus Sunday afternoon.

The suspect has been identified as Jesse Alan Kister, 31.

The university issued an alert around 4:20 p.m. Sunday after a man displayed a knife or knives near the Pit on UNC's campus. Police say the man fled the area and was later arrested on East Franklin Street outside the Chapel of the Cross Episcopal Church.

Officers said Kister had knives on his person at the time of his arrest.

In addition to issuing an emergency notification, the university also activated its sirens and advised all students, faculty and staff to stay indoors.

Randy Young, with UNC campus police, said Kister was involuntarily committed to the hospital and will be formally charged with assault with a deadly weapon once he is released.
