WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Current and past elected officials in the city gathered at West Springfield Middle School on Saturday to celebrate the city's 240th birthday.

This weekend marks the anniversary of the very first town meeting held in the city, which took place on March 23, 1774.

State Senator James Welch, who was raised and served in West Springfield, told CBS 3 that it is important for the city to remember its past.

"That's really what this country is all about, passing those stories and lessons on," said Welch.  "That's what our communities are all about. What lessons have we learned from the generations that came before us?"

Not only did those in attendance sign a guest book, they took part in a time capsule that commemorated the day's festivities.
