State PD testing cameras in Holyoke to use for Boston Marathon

HOLYOKE, MA (WSHM) -

As half a million people plan to travel into the city of Holyoke this weekend for their annual St. Patrick's day events, around 80 surveillance cameras along the parade route will be keeping watch.

The cameras are being installed by Massachusetts State Police and will feed live into monitors for police to watch closely.

State Police assist Holyoke Police every year with parade security coverage, but this year, they're testing those cameras ahead of using them at the Boston Marathon.

"We've installed a series of state police temporary cameras where we have them all that video feed piped into, we also have our city cameras piped into the same feed almost like a command post so to speak so everything will be live," said Holyoke Police Chief James Nieswanger. "There will be better coverage and additional resources out there to manage anything that happens to come up on the day."

Officials say the cameras will have the ability to zoom in closer and microphone sensing technology will be used to pinpoint the exact location of gunfire.

Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse says this is the biggest event of the year for the city and they want to take every precaution possible to ensure the safety of all residents and visitors.

"The Mass state police is collaborating with the police department to test new security cameras that will be implemented in the Boston Marathon this year. We welcome the opportunity, we welcome new programs to keep folks safe," said Mayor Morse.

The cameras will only be used for the weekend and will be taken down after the parade.
